At a staged reading for this play, a sophisticated audience of seasoned theater goers, writers and directors commented that this play was a “very good time” and that it was “a tight story with no plot holes.” One said, “There are enough Easter Eggs within Perry Ludlow to make me come back to see it at least twice to catch them all.” Best of all, everyone in attendance said they’d pay money to see it and are hoping it will be staged locally, here in Virginia. Your audiences will say the same.
Full Length
Genre: Drama
Acts: Two
Cast: 1 Woman, 8 Men
Performance History:
- This play has not yet received its world premiere. It was, however selected by Exit, Pursued by a Bear Theater’s inaugural “New Year, New Works” Festival held in January 2025. It was presented as a full staged reading and was well received by an enthusiastic audience in Roanoke, Virginia.
SYNOPSIS:
Set in the present day with flashbacks from thirty years before, a group of middle-aged and
slightly older men call themselves “The Bedford Pirates.” It’s a throwback to the glory days of
high school when they were thick as thieves, and a nod to their annual summer “men’s only”
vacation in the Florida Keys. The leader of the pack, Perry Ludlow, was “most likely to succeed”
in high school…and he did. Big career, big money, and big philanthropy too. The other men look
up to Perry as if he’s a little lower than the gods. But Perry has clay feet, as they will discover,
after he suddenly dies. He’s not the only one with secrets, however. Each man will learn
something about himself and the others, not all of it good.
